Narcissus in Chains (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #10) by Laurell K. Hamilton

∴ Narcissus in Chains (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #10) by Laurell K. Hamilton ∴

Synopsis:

Hamilton’s vampire-hunting Anita Blake faces a plethora of foes in her tenth outing.

Just returned to St. Louis after six months away, Anita is still no closer to choosing between her loversβ€”Jean-Claude, a vampire, and Richard, a werewolf. But she has to rely on both for help after two of the wereleopards that she has been watching are abducted at a seedy club called Narcissus in Chains.

Anita and her boyfriends rescue the wereleopards from the sinister people holding them, but Anita is wounded in the fight and put at risk of becoming a wereleopard herself. Richard angrily captures the wereleopard he believes is responsible and threatens to execute him.

Anita must now rescue that wereleopard from Richard and the werewolves he leads, even as she mourns the apparent end of her relationship with him. Then she realizes that those who kidnapped the first two wereleopards are targeting other lycanthropes. Maybe she will be next.

With plenty of steamy sex and graphic violence, this is engaging reading for vampire cultists.

MINOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
Let me start off by saying that I went into this book with an open mind. I have read MANY reviews that say this book is where the series goes downhill and I wanted my opinion to be purely my own. I wanted to give this installment a chance because this series deserves it.
I am a person that will choose character relationship/character development over plot development so this book did not bother me. There is more talking/politics in this book than the previous installments which I enjoyed. I will admit that people who love plot more will most likely not enjoy this book. The plot and the villain didn’t really become a focus until the last 15% of the book and I can see why that would annoy someone that looks forward to the plot/action of this series.
Can I see a major difference in structure between this book and the previous? Yes. But all because a story’s main plot structure changes, that doesn’t mean that the book is bad. It just means that the author wanted to go in a different direction. (Look at the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas . The whole structure and plot format for that series changed in book three and I love the series more for it.)
While I HATE the Richard/Anita plot line, I will admit that I like the drama that their relationship adds to the series. My favorite part of this story was Micah. I am so happy that Anita had some other were animal love interest and I honestly hope that he is Richard’s replacement. I hated Richard going in and his actions during this book only proved that he is not right for Anita. I can only hope that they are broken up for good this time though I doubt it.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. There was plenty of drama and character development which I LOVED. I will be continuing the series with Cerulean Sins . I hope that it is just as good and entertaining as this installment was.

β€œLove sucks. Sometimes it feels good. Sometimes it’s just another way to bleed.”

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
I really liked this book. It was fast paced and constantly had my attention. I did not want to put it down! There was plenty of action, intrigue, and some more vampire politics in this installment. While I did feel like some parts weren’t flushed out all of the way, I still found it enjoyable.
I like Anita for the most part. She isn’t my favorite character by a long shot, but I like her a lot more than I used to. I still think that she is stubborn as hell and I don’t agree with some of her choices, but I have learned to accept it.
I feel like Anita has always straddled the line between right and wrong and I have been 100% supportive of her self defense/killing people decisions this far. But… I feel like she crossed a major line in this book that I never thought she would. I honestly don’t know if she is the “good guy” anymore. The good guys don’t torture people for information, right? The good guys feel some remorse for their bad actions, right? I just don’t know anymore.
I am not the biggest fan of Richard, but I have come to terms with the fact that he is here to stay. There were a few times when I saw possibilities for other love interests besides Jean-Claude and Richard (Asher, Damian, Nathaniel, and Jason) and I am starting to wonder if this series isn’t going to end up being a reverse harem.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. While this isn’t my favorite installment, I still had a fun time while reading it. I am very interested in finding out what is going to happen next so I will be continuing the series with Obsidian Butterfly.

β€œNever trust people who smile constantly. They’re either selling something or not very bright.

SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:

I loved this book. It was fast paced and constantly had my attention. I did not want to put it down! There was plenty action, intrigue, and even politics in this installment. I loved the political maneuvering throughout this book, even though Anita wasn’t that good at it.
I like Anita. She isn’t my favorite character by a long shot, but I like her a lot more than I used to. I still think that she is stubborn as hell and I still don’t agree with some of her choices, but I have learned to accept it. Though, Anita is killing me with the back and forth between Richard and Jean-Claude.
My favorite part of this book was the villains. The Vampire Council felt like an actual threat to Anita and it took more than a few bullets to handle them. I have been waiting for a villain to come along that I love to hate and it finally happened. They sickened me to an all new level and I finally felt more than just meh about their actions. I look forward to seeing more of the Council in the future.
SIDE NOTE: I really liked Warrick. He is the first vampire in this series to still be religious and I found his outlook on life refreshing. I am sad that he died.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The past three books have been getting better and better and I hope that Laurell K. Hamilton stays on the path she’s on because it is working for me. I will be continuing the series with Blue Moon.

β€œIf you love someone, truly love them, you should never cause them pain. Never fill their eyes with something so close to grief.”

SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
I really liked this book. It was fast paced and constantly had my attention. There was plenty of action and mystery. I felt like every scene had value and there were rarely any boring parts.
I like Anita a lot more than I used to, but she still has a ways to go before I will really like her character. I feel like she won’t admit a lot of things to herself and sometimes, I just want to shake her until she finally admits the truth. I was proud that she finally admitted she was a hypocrite when it came to Jean-Claude and Richard (It only took her three books). I was also really happy that she admitted to herself that she had more than just a few feelings for Jean-Claude. I just struggle with her because it takes her so long to realize these things.
I am 100% on the Jean-Claude train if you couldn’t tell. I love his character so much and I really don’t understand why Anita just won’ let herself love him completely. Nine times out of ten, I will be on the werewolf/shifter’s side but there is just something about Richard that pushes my buttons. I was happy when him and Anita broke up and I really don’t care if they get back together or not. Even though Anita seems to be leaning more towards Richard right now, I still have hope that she will come to her senses and be with Jean-Claude.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I even think that it is the best installment yet. I will be continuing the series with Burnt Offerings. I can’t wait to read it!

MINOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
I really liked this book. It was fast paced and constantly had my attention. There was plenty of action and mystery. Anita didn’t annoy me as much as she used to which is a plus.
There was more Jean-Claude moments in this book which I have been dying for. Richard wasn’t present for 98% percent of this installment and surprisingly, I didn’t really miss him. I feel like Jean-Claude was never given a fair chance with Anita and I was so proud of how far their relationship had progressed by the end of this book. Anita even says:

Somehow Jean-Claude has crossed that line that a handful of other vampires have crossed. I don’t think of him as a monster anymore.

FINALLY!!!
Overall, I enjoyed this book. Even though I have some issues with it, I will be continuing on with this series. I can’t wait to read The Killing Dance !

β€œI loved him, but love isn’t enough. All the fairy tales, the romance novels, the soap operas; they’re all lies. Love does not conquer all.”

I really liked this installment in the Anita Blake series. It was fast paced and constantly had my attention. I actually ended up reading this book in one sitting. There was plenty of action and even a little intrigue. There was more politics in this book than previous and I liked that as well.
While I liked Anita a little more in this book than previous, she still annoys me. I have said before that I find her extremely one dimensional. Anita has one way of thinking and won’t even consider that she may be wrong. While I like a character with a strong sense of right and wrong, I find her extremely judgemental and no matter how much she may deny it, she is prejudiced when it comes to supernaturals. I also think that she is extremely hypocritical. She won’t be with Jean-Claude because he is one of the “monsters” but she will be with Richard who she admits is also one? That is extremely hypocritical and it makes me really dislike her character.
SIDE NOTE: Sometimes I wish Laurell K. Hamilton would give us more about the other supernatural races. They were briefly mentioned in this book, but we never got real explanations of them. I want to learn more about the other weres especially and I hope that Hamilton includes them more in the future installments.
Overall, I did enjoy this book and I do think that it is the best installment in the series so far. I will be continuing the series with Bloody Bones.

WARNING: RANT BELOW
SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
I liked this book. It was fast paced and constantly had my attention. There was plenty of action and there weren’t a lot of boring sections. While I did have some issues with Anita, the story itself is really good and consistent.
I just have issues with Anita’s personality. I find her really one dimensional and I feel like she plays both sides of the fence. I believe with my whole heart that Anita has feelings for Jean-Claude but she will deny it forever. She is also one of those characters who lies to herself throughout the book and then is all shocked when the truth finally comes out.
I understand that Anita is extremely religious and doesn’t want to anything to compromise her soul. I even agree with her on that. But she would rather Alejandro give her all four marks by force then let Jean-Claude ease her into it. She calls Jean-Claude evil and a monster, but if he really was, she would have had all four marks of his MONTHS ago. I don’t care how tough she is, if Jean-Claude REALLY wanted to, he would give her the marks and she would be his human servant by now.
I think that Jean-Claude loves Anita and she is so stuck in her ways, that she won’t believe that. Because if Anita did admit that Jean-Claude loved her and was capable of that human emotion, she wouldn’t be able to call him an emotionless monster and maybe, she would have to accept that the only thing standing in the way of them being together, is herself. Jean-Claude isn’t the problem in their relationship, Anita is.
Overall, I do like this series. Anita just ticks me off sometimes- err… most of the time. I have heard that Anita gets more accepting over time and I do hope that is true. I don’t know if I could put up with her, as she is now, for twenty-ish books. I am not ready to give up on this series yet, because the story is entertaining and I do have fun when I read the installments. I will be continuing the series with The Lunatic Cafe .

β€œPeople are supposed to fear the unknown, but ignorance is bliss when knowledge is so damn frightening.”

MINOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
I liked this installment in the series. While I did not enjoy it as much as the first book, I still had a fun time while reading it.
I think that the reason I didn’t like it was because of who the “bad guys” were and because of the central plot. I am not a big fan of the zombie/voodoo plot line and this book had a lot of that in it. I will also say that there were a few parts in this book where I was completely grossed out. I have read books where there were demented/disgusting things but the crime scenes in this book were described in a way that made me nauseous.
Even with all of those things, I will be continuing the series with Circus of the Damned . I still like this series, I just think that there will be certain books in it that have plots that will appeal to me more than others. I don’t believe that the writing was bad in this book, it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

β€œMost hatred is based on fear, one way or another. Yeah. I wrapped myself in anger, with a dash of hate, and at the bottom of it all was an icy center of pure terror.”

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I had a lot of fun while reading it and I liked Anita a lot more than I thought I would. I went into Guilty Pleasures not expecting to like it because it isn’t really my thing. The only reason I read it was because I have heard really good things about it and wanted to try something new. I was told that this series is very plot driven and I am more of a character driven person. I also heard that after book ten, the series goes into a direction that is more my style so I thought that I would have to push through the first ten books or so. I didn’t have to push through this book at all and if the next nine books are like this one, I won’t have to push through those either. I will be continuing the series with the next installment The Laughing Corpse.

Synopsis:

Someone tried to kill Kayli Winchester. That someone is going to pay.

After going overboard and nearly drowning, Kayli regroups and joins Axel, Corey, Brandon, Marc, and Raven back on board the Lucienda. This time, she’s brought reinforcements. Liam and Henry join the team in an all-out hunt for a killer. It can’t be too hard; there’s only so many places to hide on a cruise ship. But the number of suspects is climbing.

Tensions are high, and everyone is on alert, but along the way, there’s way too many distractions–very hot distractions. Kayli’s done hiding her feelings. She’s showing her hand, come what may. She’s never held back before she met this team–why start now?

But when one of their team members disappears, all clues point to mutiny. Is the team going to fracture because of her? Did someone throw her overboard because of jealousy?

Kayli refuses to believe it, but she’ll have to provide proof before the murderer finds out she’s still alive and comes back to complete the job.

SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
I loved this book! It gave me all of the feels and it sucks that I have finally caught up and now I have to wait for the next book to come out. The book was fast paced and constantly had my attention. It picked up right where Accessory left off with Kayli and Blake in the motel with Liam. It starts off with them waking up to go get back on the boat. I was actually surprised how quickly they got back.
Kayli has grown so much since the first book yet she is still who she has always been. Her personality is the same but she isn’t holding back anymore when it comes to her feelings for the boys. She got everything out and in the open and told them that she couldn’t choose. That takes courage and it made her be more open with her heart and finally realizing that there could be a major consequence for her actions. She also found out about Corey and his feelings, but he still hasn’t got a kiss which I’m kind of mad about.
Also, we found out that Raven is bisexual as well as Corey and he has feelings for both Kayli and Corey. Apparently, he has known about Corey’s feelings for him for a while and he knew that Corey had feelings for Kayli as well. I just want to say that I called it in book 2 when we found out that Corey had a crush on someone but they didn’t say who. I had a feeling it was Raven all along.
I was actually surprised at the boys reactions to finding about each other. None of them seemed to have a problem with it. They didn’t blow up or even act like it really affected them. The only thing they seemed a little mad about was Kayli’s feelings for Blake. I can’t really blame them for that. I am very curious how the Academy is going to take this when they find out. I do know from book 10 of The Ghost Bird, that Kayli goes to Academy Camp with the boys as a possible recruit. At the end, Marc goes into meet with the council to try to convince them to let her on their team. He comes out later and Kayli says “What? I’m out, aren’t I?”. Marc then says, “No. But you’re not going to like it.”. This leads me to believe that the Academy says she can join their team, but she might have to stay away from Blake to do so.
There are so many thoughts and theories going on in my head right now, I can’t think. I just know that it is going to be a long wait until Love’s Cruel Redemption (The Ghost Bird #12) and Tempest (The Scarab Beetle #6). I love C.L. Stone’s writing and I can’t wait to read he next installment!

Current Rankings:
