AUTHOR Q&A: Evi Rhodes

A Warrior's Promise Series by Evi Rhodes Paranormal Romance Urban Fantasy Series

Hello Lovelies! Today I have a Q&A for you guys from the lovely Evi Rhodes! She is a new-to-me author and maybe one for you too! Hopefully, through this Q&A you guys will get to meet her and be introduced to her books!

About the Books:

This is a steamy paranormal romance/urban fantasy series featuring vampires, werewolves, paranormal academy, kick-ass heroine and alpha hero.
Please note, the first book in the series is more of a traditional, sexy paranormal romance, but the second book heats up even more with the appearance of a secondary love interest resulting in a reverse harem.

A Warrior’s Promise Series deals with themes and struggles outside of your typical paranormal romance including varied sexual preferences, physical, mental and sexual abuse, addictions, interracial relationships all happening alongside a raging battle between good and evil.

Synopsis:

WICKED NIGHT
Follow the journey of a strong, independent, yet caring woman as she navigates the supernatural world she is thrust into. Gwen steps out of a dysfunctional family life and into a world filled with danger she never realized lives at every turn, fiery passion, and a love that is ever binding. How will she handle her strange new surroundings as well as the man with the intense and overbearing personality who threatens to destroy the emotional barriers around her heart? Wicked, the next in line to become the vampire king, is caught off guard when he grudgingly agrees to take on a charge, something he never wanted to do. He is unsure how to handle the fierce and vibrant woman with the unsettling green eyes. It doesn’t take long for them to clash, but will it end passionately or burn down around them?

Author Q&A:

Q: Why did you write your book?

A: I wrote this series because I wanted to tell a story of not just female strength, but what we can accomplish when we do not let prejudices stand in our way. I wanted the readers to have to accept, forgive and grow along with the heroine, hero and so many others.
I also wanted my readers to shrug off the old ideal of what a loving, healthy relationship looks like.

I feel there are many ways to love and be in a healthy relationship including multiple partners, LGBTQ and of course, what many consider to be traditional. I wanted people to broaden their minds as to what it means to have a life partner.

I wanted to show that. for much of our life we live in either the far left, or far right way of thinking, but what would happen if you were forced to walk with one foot on either side of the line? Our heroine, hero and those that surround them are not all good or all evil. Of course, this all takes place in a supernatural environment which allows for unusual circumstances, problems and questions that keep the reader thinking.

Q: Why do you think readers will care about this book?

A: A Warrior’s Promise Series deals with themes and struggles outside of your typical paranormal romance including varied sexual preferences, physical, mental and sexual abuse, addictions, interracial relationships all happening alongside a raging battle between good and evil.

Q: Where did you get the inspiration for the story and characters?

A: My inspiration is all the strong, yet loving, understanding and inspirational women I have grown up knowing. I wanted to create a heroine people can fall in love with, want to follow but with whom they might not always agree. I want readers to laugh, cry and get angry with my characters. perhaps seeing a little of themselves in the process.
I asked myself the question, why is it that a woman who is strong has to be seen as hard and ruthless when there are so many layers to a woman? In A Warrior’s Promise Series, the reader follows Gwen as she learns to grow up quickly but manages to still learn to love and forgive freely.

Q: How did you come up with ideas for your books?

A: The ideas for my work come from all around me; my friends, family and even strangers. Everyone has a story to tell in whole or in part that I feel needs to be shared. On the other hand at times ideas just come to me and I ask myself where did that come from and don’t have an answer. Mostly, I wanted to give a voice to those that wouldn’t normally share their private stories with the world by sharing them in a way that they wouldn’t feel their life was on display. In giving these people’s stories that voice, I feel that my characters come alive for my readers.

Q: What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

A: Even from a young age I would polish off a novel a week loving the ability to lose myself in the story and would find myself daydreaming of writing a story of my own. I stopped writing for a long time to pursue my lifelong dream of being an Olympian on a more serious level. I train with some of the best in the world, which required all my time. It was only after I had to give up that dream, for a variety of reasons, that I picked writing back up. It not only served as a passion to devote myself to, but it was also a form of therapy as I felt as if I no longer had a purpose. Frankly, it was as though the world was passing me by and I was stuck standing still, as if I was lost among everyone else’s normal day-to-day. This is a feeling many suffer when they are so hyper-focused on a single task and it comes to an end; athletes of all kinds seem to be extremely prone to this due to the nature of how they dedicate every moment of their day to their sport.

Q: If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?

A: I would want to be Gwen; even though when we first meet her she seems weak and immature. Once you get to know her you realize this behaviour stems from the time she is young and that she has had to hide her true self behind an arrogant dismissive mask to protect herself. In reality, she is a pretty wonderful selfless character. And as an author there is a little bit of you in all your characters, yet I find myself relating to her and her growth arc. Besides who wouldn’t want to end up with the hot lead character?

Q: If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your leading roles?

A: Oh wow wouldn’t it be fun to choose! I think I would pick Theo James to be Wicked, Ruby Rose as Gwen, Ryan Reynolds as Craze, Jared Leto as Kayden

Q: When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?

A: I think I’m no different than every other author who at some point has been skeptical to make the leap and have your work published. The very idea of it being viewed, reviewed and judged by the world is certainly unnerving. I first decided to submit my work early 2018 and there are two people that contributed to me making the final leap from dreaming about publishing to actually doing it. The first one is my very best friend who encouraged me every step of the way, her confidence and appreciation for what I had written gave me hope that the dream could be real. The second person that helped me take the final step was my Uncle; he is a horror writer himself and although my work was not his genre of choice, he said, “girl you are a writer, let’s get that straight. Now if we can only get you to say it with less words.” And although I did laugh hard, he was also the first person to rip my work apart and yet in this profound way helped me see that
criticism wasn’t bad. It is simply how we all learn to improve. From that day forward I made the decision to publish my story.

Q: Do you outline your books or just start writing?

A: I have a generic outline of what I want to have happen. I have my characters very well
conceptualized, as well as where I want them to start and where I want their story to finish, but the rest of the story is all flow. I let the characters tell me what should happen next, what would their character do next? What would they say next? I found that if I created a strict timeline my writing became too mechanical and didn’t have the same connection with the characters lifelike and unpredictable natures.

Q: Do you have any hobbies and does the knowledge you’ve gained from these carry over into your characters or the plot of your books?

A: Yes, most definitely. I have always ridden horses and have a number of animals; I’ve consistently worked out including CrossFit and boxing, as well as dabbled in many other activities for fun or relaxation. I pull many descriptions for my scenes from my real life experiences. As well as I wanted my characters to feel as real as possible, and I find the best way to understand something is to try it for yourself.

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about what it was like to write a series?

A: A series I feel is a little different than a single book for the simple fact that you have to have short-term goals and a long-term plan for all your characters that stretches a vast period of time. And although I do allow my work to flow, I have to know what struggles and triumphs I want each of my characters to face, as well as what thought-provoking issues I want to bring up along the way. It’s also tricky to balance the ability to give the readers enough that they feel they have come along on the journey so far and are left feeling satisfied yet leaving just enough intrigue to keep them wanting to see what happens next. It is also difficult to make sure you don’t have any of those pesky inconsistencies with characters, scenes, or plots; pages and pages of notes is a
definite must.

Synopsis:

When Evelyn Dasher crossed paths with Luc, she was thrown headfirst into the world of the Lux—only to discover that she was already far more involved in their world than she ever suspected.

Because the Luxen aren’t the only ones with a hidden past. There’s a gap in Evie’s memory, lost months of her life and a lingering sense that something happened, something she can’t remember and nobody is willing to tell her. She needs to find out the truth about who she is—and who she was. But every answer she finds only brings up more questions.

Her search for the truth brings her ever closer to Luc, the Origin at the center of it all. He’s powerful, arrogant, inhumanly beautiful, extremely dangerous…and possibly in love with her. But even as Evie falls for him, she can’t help but wonder if his attraction is to her, or to the memory of a girl who no longer exists.

And all the while, a new threat looms: reports of a flu-like, fatal virus that the government insists is being spread by Luxen. A horrifying illness that changes whoever it touches, spreading panic across a country already at its breaking point.

#1 New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout returns to the world of the Lux with this steamy, shocking second installment of the Origin series that will leave readers reeling.

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
I loved this book! It was everything I hoped it would be and so much more! It picked up right where the last book left off and the events that followed were just twist after twist after twist. This might just be one of Jennifer’s best books yet! It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and I know I’m going to get a major book hangover now that it is over! I NEED THE NEXT BOOK!!!

“You don’t need to worry about me, Peaches. I’m always going to come back to you. That’s a promise.”

Evie- Evie surprised me in this book. I thought I had her character figured out, but NOPE. I should have known that Jennifer was going to throw a giant twist into the mix and change everything that I thought I knew. I always wanted to know what would happen if the Luxen and the Arum were cross bred and… now I know and it is nothing like I expected it to be! I feel like we only scratched the surface with what Evie is capable of in this book and I am so excited to dive in more in future installments.

“You,” he spoke. “It’s only ever been you. Before. Now. Later. There’s been no one else. There…just can’t be.”

Luc- Could I love Luc more? No…. I really don’t think so! He is sweet and protective and caring and fierce and strong and brave and just…. everything. He is so precious and I am probably attached to him in an unhealthy way but that is not the point and I fell even deeper in love with him during this book. The way he cares about Evie and the lengths he will go to to keep her safe is awe-inspiring. I think if I had to pick one emoji I could use to describe this book, it would have to be the heart eyes an 90% of that would be directed at Luc! I need more of him! I would really love a chapter in his POV Jennifer if you’re listening…

“I am not walking away again. If I kiss you, if I touch you again, I will not be able to go back to the way things are now.” The next breath he took trembled as much as I was. “I won’t be able to pretend that you aren’t my everything”.

Katy/Daemon/The Old Crew- It was so great to see everyone again! I cried more than once at seeing them all so happy and grown up! And we got to see Katy pregnant?! My babies are having babies and I can’t even wrap my head around that! And Dee is a spokes person for the Luxen now?! I feel like everything has just come full circle and I couldn’t be more proud of her! Plus, we got to see Dawson and Bethany’s daughter Ash! Our first natural Origin baby and she was just so precious! I am DYING to know more about her and any special abilities she may have! (And I would so totally be down for another spin-off about her!!)

“There is only you and me. Boyfriend. Girlfriend. Mates. Lovers,” he said, and muscles low in my stomach curled tight. “I don’t care what you call me as long as you call me yours.”

The Cliffhanger- I wasn’t exactly surprised that Jason Dasher is still alive. Like I always say: If you don’t see a body, see it burned to ashes, and scattered to the farthest corners of the Earth, they aren’t dead! I pretty much guessed it as soon as Evie started hearing a male voice in her head. I have been reading Jennifer’s books for a while now and I’d like to think I’m starting to get an idea of where her mind goes. (I say that, but look how shocked I was with Storm and Fury) I was also starting to catch on with the whole Evie being a trap for Luc thing too. Given, I was thinking she was made to kill him instead of being his ultimate weakness, but I was on the right track. Plus, that is something I’m happy I was wrong about.

“You lost me,” I whispered. “I lost you.”
“Did we lose each other?” he asked, and then I felt his fingers on my cheeks, chasing a tear that had sneaked free. “You and I are here right now, aren’t we? Somehow, you found me, and I’m not someone who believes in happenstance. I don’t think it was a fluke … I think it was something that was bound to happen and I…”
I opened my eyes, finding his. “What?”
“I was just waiting.”

SIDE NOTE: After reading the quote, “You’re the Burning Shadow and he’s the Darkest Star, and together, you will bring about the brightest night.” , I have a really high suspicion that the final book is going to be called The Brightest Night. I could be really wrong, but if I’m right, I called it here!!!

“By the way, just going to remind you that you told me last night you missed me.”
I had. “I must’ve been high.”
“On my presence.”

Overall, I highly enjoyed this book (as if you couldn’t tell that already) and I will definitely be continuing the series!!! How could I not?? Jennifer is one of my favorite authors and she sucks me into her books like no one else! I can’t imagine not reading the next installment!

***P.S. I know all of the quotes I used are Luc quotes, but after reading this review, do you honestly think I could use any others?!***

Zayne has secrets of his own that will upend her world yet again—but working together becomes imperative once demons breach the compound and Trinity’s secret comes to light. To save her family and maybe the world, she’ll have to put her trust in Zayne. But all bets are off as a supernatural war is unleashed…

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

“A slow, heart-wrenching smile pulled at his lips. A real one, and it was the kind of smile that could break hearts and rebuild them.”

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
After reading The Darkest Star last year, I didn’t think that I could love a JLA book more or love a spin-off of hers as much as that one… BUT. HOLY. CRAP. I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! It has got to be Jennifer’s best so far! I just couldn’t put it down for the life of me and I was hooked from the very first chapter! I was practically fan-girling the whole time because I just love this universe and I have been hoping to get more books in it for years! It was just everything I was hoping it would be and much more!

Trinity- How can anyone not love Trinity? She is just such a badass while also having that emotional side that makes her so easy to connect to. Learning about her (and Jennifer’s) retinitis pigmentosa absolutely broke my heart to read about and it only made me admire her character more!

Zayne- OHHHHH…. Zayne… *sighs dreamily* I loved him in The Dark Elements series and this book made me (impossibly) love him more! He is just so kind and caring and sweet and loving and perfect and… you get the point. Where can I find a guy like him? Because I swear they just aren’t made like that anymore.

Misha- I have to say, I never saw the Misha twist coming… so bravo Jennifer! I really liked Misha right until the end and his betrayal was just that much more shocking because of it.

Peanut- I’m not gonna lie, Peanut kind of annoyed me at different points in the book BUT I did enjoy his banter with Trinity most of the time and I value his character. I’m really curious to see what role he will play in the future books.

Roth & Layla- I have to say, we got a lot more of Roth and Layla than I thought we were going to. I assumed we would just see them pop their heads in here and there throughout the series, but I was so wrong. They played a big role in this book and I am just so thankful for that. I loved seeing how they were and that scene where Roth saw Bambi again just gave me so many feels! I am looking forward to seeing more of them in the coming books.

The End/The Protector Switch Twist: About two pages before it happened, I realized where this book was going. I realized that this whole book was just a set up for the real story to come and that Jennifer’s signature forbidden romance was about to kick in to full gear… and that was when my heart was officially broke. I just ship Zayne and Trinity SOOOO much and I thought they had enough obstacles already, but NOOOO Jennifer just had to slap a Protector bond on top of everything else… Uhhhh… I’m in for a lot of angst, heart ache, and frustration in the future aren’t I?

SIDE NOTE: For those that don’t know, I had the wonderful privilege of meeting Jennifer last year and, at the time, I had no idea about her having RP. And let me tell you, I never would have known if she hadn’t said anything/released this book. She didn’t give any hint of it and, knowing what I know now, I could not admire her more. Jennifer doesn’t let her disease define her or make her less of a person, and I will always look up to her as a role model for that. I couldn’t love her or her writing more!

Overall, I highly enjoyed this book and I need the next one in my hands like yesterday!!! At least I have The Burning Shadow coming out in October to at least try to tide me over! *cries*

Storm Cursed (Mercy Thompson #11) by Patricia Briggs

25026912. sy475

Goodreads | Amazon US | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository | Books-A-Million

Synopsis:

In this powerful entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, Mercy Thompson must face a deadly enemy to defend all she loves…

My name is Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman, and I am a car mechanic.

And a coyote shapeshifter.

And the mate of the Alpha of the Columbia Basin werewolf pack.

Even so, none of that would have gotten me into trouble if, a few months ago, I hadn’t stood upon a bridge and taken responsibility for the safety of the citizens who lived in our territory. It seemed like the thing to do at the time. It should have only involved hunting down killer goblins, zombie goats, and an occasional troll. Instead, our home was viewed as neutral ground, a place where humans would feel safe to come and treat with the fae.

The reality is that nothing and no one is safe. As generals and politicians face off with the Gray Lords of the fae, a storm is coming and her name is Death.

But we are pack, and we have given our word.

We will die to keep it.

“My old pastor liked to say that church is a hospital for the sick, not a mausoleum for the saints.”

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
This book was a giant let down. I don’t know if it’s because I had been hyping the book up in my head for the past two years, if I have just fallen out of love with this series, or if it was just not a good book, but for some reason or another, this book just fell flat.

While the plot moved fast, I constantly found myself bored and not attached to what was happening in any way. I think the main reason for this is because I am a very character driven person and this book was honestly 80% plot and 20% characters. There were very few moments where I was genuinely connected with what was happening. The only scenes that really made me smile or feel happy was the Adam and Mercy scenes which, to be honest, I have to say that I kind of prefer Adam’s character to Mercy’s?!

What I Liked- I liked the Elizaveta plot twist and her turning into a black witch was done really well. I also enjoyed the mini Paul redemption arc. That little scene really warmed my heart.

What I Didn’t Like- 1. Besides the stuff mentioned above, there wasn’t nearly enough Stefan in this book. I love him to pieces and Mercy’s problems with him right now is just overkill. 2. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve read so many of these books, but the villains aren’t even scary any more. I didn’t think for one moment that Mercy and her friends would lose while I was reading this. Plus, all of the villains are really one-dimensional. They are wholly bad and uninteresting. Can’t we get a morally grey/multi-dimensional villain for once? 3. The fae meeting was such a let down. It was hyped up the whole book and I was SO interested in seeing the humans interact with the Gray Lords but it was literally mentioned briefly in a paragraph at the end! What is that?!?!

Overall, this book just wasn’t for me. I don’t know if I will be continuing the series or not at this point. I guess it will just depend on what the next book is about.

Synopsis:

Jase Kayrs was the fun brother. The warm, charming, easy-going brother of the vampire leaders. Until he was taken and tortured by demons with their evil mind tricks for nearly five years. Upon his return, he’s dark, violent, and not the man they all thought they knew. Not the man he once was. He’s haunted that the only reason the demons would have let him live was to use him as a weapon against his family—but he can’t figure out when or how he’ll explode. Plus, once again the demons are after Jase with a vengeance…or rather, a female demon he rejected is out to destroy him.

Then the king asks Jase for a favor… a big one. To mate with one of their allies in order to save her. She’s everything that’s good and light in the world… while he’s at home with darkness. Yet he agrees… knowing mating may be the only chance to save them both.

🍁🍁🍁

He could do this. It was time to reclaim his life, to be who he wanted to be and not who the demons had tried to turn him into. He was Jase-fucking-Kayrs, and he controlled the elements.

I liked this book. I enjoyed the relationship between Brenna and Jase. Watching them both come together and save one another was absolutely beautiful. And the progressions of their characters separately and together was just well done.

I’ve come to realize something that I really don’t like about this series. This book takes place twenty years after the first book and it doesn’t feel like the plot is going anywhere. The villain is the same, the virus is still just as deadly and no where close to being cured, and the conflicts are starting to feel really competitive. If it weren’t for the fact that everything seems to be coming to a head in the next book, I probably would have DNF’d this series. I hate to say that, but it’s true.

It also feels like the same thing happens in each book. Someone gets kidnapped, everyone rushes to save them, some trap is laid that typically fails, eventually they get the person back, and then another person is taken. It’s the same thing over and over and over again. I have stopped being as emotionally invested as I once was because of it.

In fact, I might be taking a break from this series for a while because I’ve just gotten bored at this point.

“I love you with everything I am and everything I’ll ever be.”

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
I loved this book! From the very first chapter, I was hooked. I sped through the rest of the book and I was finished before I knew it. The story line was just so addicting and I did not want to put this book down!

Amber- Amber was… very different from the previous main female characters. Her attitude was refreshing and how she would react to things wasn’t always easy to guess. Her outlook on life was a surprise as well. She was a vegan, pacifist, and very eco supportive. While this is all well and good, sometimes her ranting over the leather couches when Jase was being physically and mentally tortured came off really bad for me. Sometimes, you have to be thankful with what you’ve got, even if it isn’t the best thing in the world or necessarily what you wanted.

Kane- Going in to this book, I had been really interested in Kane. I wanted to see what woman could rack his cold logic/emotionless exterior. Well, Amber certainly did that. I loved Kane in this book though. Watching him steadily begin to lose control over his emotions and watching his scientist brain begin to understand love was SO great!

Jase- My poor baby Jase. His chapters were the hardest to get through. I cried and my heart really hurt for him. One or two scenes of his torture was unbelievably hard for me to watch and he had already been going through it for four years. I can’t begin to imagine the pain and suffering he went through and I can only hope that he finds some reason to want to live now.

Hilde- I really don’t know what to think of Hilde. Her personality is just A LOT to take in. Her little side romance with Oscar was adorable though.

Janie & Kalin- When Janie kissed Kalin, my heart about stopped. I was like NOOOO!!! What was she thinking?!?! He got some of her blood!!! Yes, she got his blood in exchange, but this can’t possibly be good for her.

Janie & Zane- My heart aches for these two. I just want them to get together and be happy and save the world. I started screaming “YES! YES!! YEEESSSS!!!” when Zane said he is coming for her soon. Bring it on and GIVE. IT. TO. ME!!!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Obviously, I will be continuing the series. You couldn’t stop me from reading the next book if you tried! I can’t wait to start it!

“Fate smashes hope and belief into splinters of nothingness.”

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
This book threw me for a loop. I was laughing hysterically, balling my eyes out, and was frustrated out of my mind all in this one book! Needless to say, I went on a roller coaster of emotions and I really liked this book.

This book takes place ten years after the third installment. I repeat… TEN YEARS!! My baby Janie was turning sixteen and Garrett who had just been born was already ten! I felt so old and it took some getting used to. I had a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that all of these characters had aged ten years in what was only a day for me. I ultimately ended up appreciating it though. The characters being older and having gotten to know each other over the past ten years added a whole new dynamic to the story that worked a lot better than I expected.

Katie & Jordan- I’m gonna be honest… I felt like the progression of their relationship wasn’t entirely realistic. They went from secretly pining for each other for 10+ years to mauling each other the first chance they get. It seemed out of character to me, especially considering how they had always treated each other in past books.

Janie & Zane- I swear you could hear my heart break halfway across the world when I read that Zane stopped communicating with Janie five years prior to this book. They are my OTP and I sobbed when I heard that these two precious friends weren’t talking anymore. Later in the book when Janie finally contacted Zane, I was so relieved only to have my heart broken all over again when he rejected her. I swear, if these two don’t get together, I will never read another book by this author! … I am really curious what effect Zane’s blood is going to have on Janie though.

Garrett- I love Garrett SOOOO much!! He is just so precious and he makes my heart hurt with his protectiveness of his sister. That scene when he about killed Charlie had me dying laughing!

Maggie & Terrent- Maggie has guts. I’ll give her that. I couldn’t abduct the big bad Terrent and chain him. My jaw hit the floor when she did it and I have so much admiration for her now. Though, I really don’t think she is ready to face the repercussions of her actions.

Kane- I saw more of Kane’s personality in this book and I must say, I am intrigued. I want some girl to come along and crack his emotionless exterior. I am also really interested in learning more about Kane’s powers!

Noah- Noah barely appeared in this book, but my heart reached out to him. I want to know more about him and this girl he lost.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The additional two year time jump at the end of this book hit me hard and I am so concerned about Jase! I need the next book, like yesterday!

“Make no mistake, you and I remain solid even if the rest of the world blows up.”

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
This wasn’t the best installment, I must say. While I really enjoyed it, there were some elements that the previous books had that were missing in this one. For instance, Janie had only two scenes throughout the whole book. This really sucked for me because she is my favorite character. I wanted more of her and Zane.

Moira & Conn- Ultimately, their story didn’t let me down. They were both stubborn as hell, didn’t want to bend or change, and their plot line went exactly as I thought it would. I enjoyed watching them grow and learn to trust each other. They still have a long way to go though.

Katie- I cried for Katie in this book. Her whole situation just makes me sad and her injecting her self with the catalyst because she doesn’t care if she lives anymore choked me up. I can’t imagine being in her situation.

Kalin- Kalin surprised me the most in this book. His interest in Peggy threw me for a loop and going through his chapters made me incredibly sad. Kalin had a choice to make and he chose wrong. Now, he has sealed his fate as the villain in this story.

The Epilogue/Last Scene- The last scene in this book gave me chills. The whole set up with Kalin telling Janie the story about the scorpion had me on the edge of my seat. And Janie’s perception of the whole thing (like Kalin being the stork) showed me just how brilliant she is. Though, what topped it all off was Zane at the end. Him telling Janie that he is the flood gave me goosebumps. Why does Zane think that? I NEED MORE INFO!!!

Simone- Simone surprised me. From what I had seen in the previous books, I really thought that she was snotty and jealous and a secondary/background villain. I was so happy that she turned out to be good and just misunderstood. I would love to see more of her character in the later books.

Brenna- I loved Brenna! She was in the background for the majority of this book but she always grabbed my attention when she was in a scene. I really hope she is a major character in the future books and I would love to see her get a love story!

Garrett- WE HAVE A NEW KAYRS BABY! I AM SO EXCITED AND I LOVE HIM ALREADY!

What I Didn’t Like- The pacing felt really off to me. It was weird and the whole story moved really different. I had a hard time staying entertained with the story.

Overall, this was a good book. It wasn’t the best in the series, but that certainly isn’t going to stop me from continuing on. I can’t wait to read the next book!

Kane rubbed a hand over his chin. “Yeah. You ever get the feeling all hell is about to break loose?”

Emma forced a grin. “In the last week I’ve been kidnapped by a monstrous vampire race, my sister has been knocked up by a vampire prince and I’ve been branded by a king, who also bites. I’ve discovered shifters and demons exist, and the niece I’ve protected since birth is somehow prophesized to do something important by these supernatural beings. I’m also seeking help from a century old witch who looks twenty.” She exhaled loudly. “Hell already has broken loose and shattered reality.”

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
I loved this book. It was a great second installment in the Dark Protectors series. It opened up this already giant world even more and my mind is still blown. There is so much more to be discovered and I love that this author can go basically anywhere she wants.

Emma- Emma didn’t make me as mad as her sister did, but I still struggled with her character a little bit. She was just so stuck in her ways and never wanted to bend at all. Emma also never really stopped and thought about what she was doing to Dage and it came off as selfish to me rather than protective.

Dage- I love Dage! He cares about everyone around him and has such a big weight on his shoulders. He never does anything for himself because he is constantly worrying about other people. I highly enjoyed watching him be selfish when it came to Emma and how he wasn’t going to let anyone or anything take her away from him.

Talen & Cara- It was nice to get to see them in this book and see how far they have come. I am really concerned about their baby though. I feel like I am going to be constantly on edge until he is born.

Janie & Zane- Janie is consistently my favorite character in this series. She is only five years old (now) and yet she plays such a big role. Janie constantly amazes me with her abilities and her blossoming personality. I know I have a LONG way to go, but I need her and Zane to meet in person SO badly. I want a thousand books purely about them and their journey together. And yes… I ship the hell out of them! I will cry and yell forever if they do not end up together! P.S. I am really curious now what Zane is because of that conversation between him and Kalin. Is he a demon? Fey? Vampire? Something else entirely?

Moira & Conn- Moira more than exceeded my expectations in this book. That scene bewteen her and Emma when they are talking about where their mate marks are had me dying laughing. I NEED her and Conn’s story!!!!

Kane- I don’t really have an opinion on Kane yet. He’s playing the scientist role right now. I do admire his dedication though.

Jase- The youngest yet the most powerful brother?? With a tortured past because of his time during war?? Yes, please.

Katie & Jordan- Katie needs to let Jordan in and Jordan needs to get out of denial and just claim his woman already! The tension between these two is about to make me blow a gasket.

Maggie- Maggie continues to be background noise, but I can’t shake this feeling that she is going to be really important. The fact that she has no memories and could be shifter royalty for all I know is really bugging me.

Caleb- Caleb was a surprising yet VERY interesting addition to this book. I always have had a thing for the dark and morally grey males. Bring him on! I am dying for his and Lily’s story. Plus, his addition to the prophets was a big plot twist that I was not expecting.

The Demons- The addition of the demons in this book was a welcome surprise. I really want to know more about them and this 1:500 female rule. I am really hoping that peace will come between the demons and the vampires because I don’t want to see them go to war.

One thing that I really like about this series is that it turns what you think you know about supernatural creatures/magic systems and completely turns that on its head. The rules about popular creatures (werewolves, vampires, witches, ect.) are bent or changed entirely. It provides a fresh and unique take on this world and the stories in it.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Of course I will be reading the next one! I can’t wait to start Hunted.

Marry Me! Cara Paulsen does not give up easily. A scientist and a single mother, she’s used to fighting for what she wants, keeping a cool head, and doing whatever it takes to protect her daughter Janie. But “whatever it takes” has never before included a shotgun wedding to a dangerous-looking stranger with an attitude problem.

Or Else! Sure, the mysterious Talen says that he’s there to protect Cara and Janie. He also says that he’s a three-hundred-year-old vampire. Of course, the way he touches her, Cara might actually believe he’s had that long to practice. . .

“I suggest you get some rest, darlin’. Life just became very interesting.”

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
I really liked this book. The opening chapter immediately grabbed my attention and the rest of the book kept a firm hold of it. I loved how expansive the world was and I am so excited for it to open up further in future books. This installment kind of set the stage for a lot of story lines and I am looking forward to developing those more as well.

Cara- Cara was one of my biggest problems with this book. Realistically, I knew why she acted the way she did and made the choices that she did, but I still struggled with her character. I spent a lot of the book disliking the decisions that she made and her constant back and forth on if to trust Talen or not was really annoying.

Talen- I liked Talen. I appreciated how he never gave up on Cara and constantly worked to gain her love and trust. He didn’t let her rejection get in the way of what they could have. I adored Talen’s relationship with Janie and their moments together were some of my favorite throughout the whole book.

Janie- Can I have her? Like for real? Janie was just so precious and I absolutely adored her. She was my favorite character in the book and she’s only four years old!!! I can’t wait to see her grow in the future books and develop into the great woman I know she’s going to be.

Zane- I loved Zane and his relationship with Janie. It warms my heart that he is dedicating himself to her protection and is there for her. I want to see more of his character and learn more information on Zane SOO badly. What is he? Who is he?

Emma- I got to see very little of Emma in this book, but I already love her. She is just the right combination of sass and snark and I NEED her book. Seeing her and Dage develop as mates is going to be a never ending source of amusement for me. I just know it.

Kalin- I’m scared to death of this kid. I knew as soon as he came onto the page that his father was playing at being a villain. Kalin is the real deal… and he’s only fifteen. Lord, I hope that he is snuffed out before he has a chance to grow into adulthood.

Katie & Jordan- I was not expecting shifters to be a part of this series, but I am all here for it. When Katie and Jordan showed up, I was SO excited. I know that their part of this story isn’t over yet and I can’t wait to watch it unfold.

Maggie- Maggie appeared very briefly in this book, but I have a feeling that she is going to play a big role.

Conn- When is his book coming? Like I NEED it. I am dying to know more about this mate of his.

What I Didn’t Like- The pacing was a little slow at times and I didn’t feel the romance. Mainly because of Cara (as explained above). She kind of just ruined that whole story line for me. I am hoping that Dage and Emma’s book will be better.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I love these characters and need more of this world. I will definitely be continuing the series. I can’t wait to start the next book!
