Top Ten Tuesday | Books With Single-Word Titles

screenshot_2019-01-29 artstudio – dashboard(5)

Hello Lovelies! It’s my first TTT back and I am SO excited. I really missed doing these topics every week and discussing them with y’all.

Anyways, this week’s topic is Books With Single-Word Titles and it was a fun topic to do. I had a bunch of initial ideas in my head such as Nevernight or Illuminae, but then I decided that I wanted to dig a bit deeper than that. I feel like one of the biggest purposes of TTT is to introduce people to new books that they might not have heard of. SO, I tried to pick titles that are a bit unknown or underrated for this topic! Let’s get into it!

Leap Year Book Tag

Image result for february 29 leap year

Hello Lovelies! I saw this book tag going around and I figured that since a Leap Year only comes every four years, it would be a while before I could do it again so… Why not?! Let’s just jump right in!

𝟏. 𝐀𝐧 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐃𝐚𝐲: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚?

256683. sy475

This is going to seem like a really cheesy answer, but I have to go with City of Bones. This was the series that got me into reading and it has to do with that something extra that was in it. I fell in love instantly and I know I wouldn’t be the reader I am today without this book.

𝟐. 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐩: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞/𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝?

26032825. sy475

I was really afraid to read The Cruel Prince for SOOOOO long. It was really hyped up and a lot of people’s favorites and I was really scared that I wasn’t going to like it. I put off reading it and then I finally took the plunge in September. I ended up being partially right because, while I liked certain aspects of this book, I wasn’t as blown away as I wanted to be.

If you would like to, you can read my review here where I go into further detail on my feelings on this book.

𝟑. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝟒 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟒𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫?

48589609. sy475

The fourth book I read this year was Stolen By Them (Between Rebels #1). I actually really enjoyed this book, a lot more than I thought I was going to. It had a spin on villains and heroes that I really liked and I encourage you to check it out if you’re into RH or sci-fi!

𝟒. 𝟑𝟔𝟔 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫: 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝟑𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐟, 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐟, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭!

This question ended up really working out. The 6th book on my 3rd shelf is Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass #5) and the 6th book after that is Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1). Both of these belong to some of my favorite series ever so I’m glad they were the answers to this question.

𝟓. 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝: 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝟒 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐩 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫.

  1. Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson : I keep saying, “I’m going to read Brandon Sanderson this year”… and it just doesn’t happen. Maybe if I give myself four years it finally will 🤣
  2. Red Sister (Book of the Ancestor #1) : I’m hoping to read this series soon, I just keep putting it off because I feel like I haven’t been ready for it. Now that the series is complete and the spin-off is coming out, I feel like I can finally start it. I definitely think that I’ll have read this by next Leap Year.
  3. A Kiss of Shadows (Merry Gentry #1) : I have read Laurell K. Hamilton’s other series and I loved it. This series is more fae focused than the other one so I’m really expecting to love it. I just haven’t been in the mood to pick it up quite yet.
  4. And I Darken (The Conqueror’s Saga #1) : This book has been on my TBR for so long that I just hope that I will have read it within the next four years.

𝟔. 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐠: 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐓𝐁𝐑 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐭.

49424079. sx318 sy475

∴ Dearly Departed (Afterworld Academy #1)

𝟕. 𝐁𝐚𝐝 𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐤: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦?

One of the bookish things I like to stay away from is the controversies, particularly the ones on Twitter. I feel like people get really fired up on social media and a simple argument becomes a situation where a bunch of outside people get involved and then it just turns into this giant dumpster fire. And I definitely don’t want any part of that.

Thank you for joining me today! What did you think of my answers? Have you done this tag? If so, please feel free to leave a link to it down below so I can check yours out!

Life Update and Real Talk

307a9ff2-efa3-436c-8eeb-59b0fc847655-1

Hi Everyone. Let me start off by thanking each and every one of you for sticking with me and staying subscribed to me over these last few months. I haven’t posted on here and a while and, honestly, I can’t blame the people that left.

I’m going to be 1000% honest in this post. Many of you know but some might not, but my mom passed away in May of 2019. It was undoubtedly the most horrible experience I’ve ever gone through. I took a break from all social media for a while, but eventually, I felt so much guilt for not being as active as I was that I went back. And looking back now, it was much earlier than it should have been. I rushed back into things so quickly and my posts, the amount of them, and the lack of effort I put into them shows.

Eventually, I just stopped caring about my posts in general and just put them up to be there. And then I even stopped caring about that. I stopped putting out all content except for reviews on Goodreads. Then, I took a much-needed break and when I was finally ready to come back, my dad passed away.

No matter what relationship you have with your parents, losing both of them in less than a year is an experience that no one should have to go through and other people can’t possibly understand. It’s so hard to put into words… To lose people that have been a part of your life since the very beginning. You honestly feel like a part of you is gone and that your life ended with theirs. You look back at your past with those people and it feels like another life.

I wasn’t ready to come back to my blog or Instagram after losing my parents. But I’m finally at a place in my life now where I feel okay. I’m ready to come back and talk with people and share my love books again. Because trust me, there is NO way I could have made it through this year without books.

I don’t think I’ll ever get back to posting one-two times a day like I used to, but that’s because that portion of my life is over and I’m a different person than I was a year ago when I started this blog. With all of that being said, I love you all and I am so happy to get back into the swing of things! I look forward to all of your comments and messages! Thank you for your continued support.

BLOG TOUR (+EXCERPT): Secrets of the Great Fire Tree by Justine Laismith

44180656. sy475

In rural China during the New Year celebrations, Kai receives devastating news. A poor harvest spells disaster unless his mother accepts a job in the city caring for a wealthy family.

Abandoned in his mountainous village, Kai is desperate to bring his mother home. He gives in to superstition and unlocks the secrets of the Great Fire Tree. The Great Fire Tree will grant Kai’s wish—for a terrible price. With the help of his new friend Xinying and his trusted piglet, Kai will make a sacrifice to make his family whole.

Justine Laismith weaves together Chinese mystique and rural charm in an enchanting tale of an antidote that kills and an amulet that curses.

EXCERPT:

Kai fetched his basket. It was wide and deep enough that if he curled himself into a ball, he could
fit in it. Two pieces of cloths were tied to it in a loop shoulder length apart, forming the shoulder
straps for him to carry the basket on his back. Yee Por held the basket for him while he threaded
his arms through.

With the bucket inside and Piglet on a rope, Kai descended toward the thick bushes. Down the
mountain path and past the soft green that grew around the clearing to his favorite Dragon’s
Pearl Tree, the tall tree with enormous fruit that went uneaten. To Kai, it was such a wasted
effort; even more so last year when the tree tried to brighten up the dry season with heavy
blossoms. They were unusual flowers; instead of branches, they stuck out directly from the
trunk. But like any flower, the petals fell and produced its fruit.

“The birds would not eat them, so we mustn’t eat them either.” He remembered what Ma had
said.

Every tree and every rock down that familiar path to the river reminded him of Ma, how he used
to charge ahead with Pink Belly, whacking the bushes and frolicking in the clearing until Ma
caught up with them.Today, he did not feel like playing with the new piglet in the same way.
He had always gone with Ma to fetch the water. She was stronger and carried the bigger bucket.
He carried the smaller one. It only took fifteen liters.

Without Ma, the road back was windier and more treacherous. The burden of the water weighed
him down as he lumbered upward. Thank goodness Piglet was only tiny and seemed to know
how to handle the uneven terrain, grass or rock, upward or downward. He rested his tired legs
and shoulders every few meters. But each time he stopped, he listened for voices. He did not
want to be caught resting by the school bullies. Especially now he was on his own.

On one of these breaks, he heard a rustle. Then a pair of huge feet appeared on the path.

Extra, Fae Crate Unboxings

FAE CRATE UNBOXING: Break the Wheel (October 2019)

Screenshot_2019-06-11 Fae Crate - Let's live a thousand live together

Hello Lovelies! I’m back with another unboxing of my favorite subscription box, Fae Crate. These boxes are the highlight of my month and I could not love the items more! I hope you enjoy this month’s unboxing as much as I did! The items were really cute and some of them are up there when it comes to my favorites!

***There is also an option through Fae Crate to get a box with a shirt as well, but I typically opt-out of this option because of the cost. It is also more practical for me personally because I don’t typically wear t-shirts.***

October’s Theme:

Image result for fae crate october

Let’s start off with this month’s theme which was Break the Wheel! As soon as I saw this theme, I knew this month’s box was going to be great! Break the Wheel is one of my favorite plot points in books and, once I heard the fandoms for this month, there was no way I was not going to buy this box!

The art for this month was based on Sarai and Lazlo from Strange the Dreamer and I think that it was absolutely perfect for this theme! It got me SOOO hyped for this box!

The Box Itself:

For those that haven’t seen my previous unboxings, this is what the box looks like. It’s beautiful, isn’t it?!

I just love everything about this book and the way it looks. The color and logo fit the company perfectly, the *CAUTION: magic inside* lid is absolutely adorable, and the sides that have the company slogan which says, “Let’s live a thousand lives together” just warms my heart.

The Items in the Box:

image1

Reign the Earth Patch ~ I have not read this series yet, but it is on my TBR. This patch was really cute though and it is currently occupying my bookshelf.

image2

Meira Chapstick ~ This chapstick is supposed to represent Meira from Snow Like Ashes. The flavor is frozen berries and it smells really good.

image0(1)

Bone Witch Socks ~ I found these to be absolutely ADORABLE!! They fit the October month really well and I just love the sayings on the bottoms.

image2(1)

Strange the Dreamer Mouse Pad ~ This was by far one of my most favorite items in the box. It was absolutely perfect and I use it every day now!

image3

Gentlefriend Pillowcase ~ The only item that could top the mouse pad was this one! It is based on Nevernight and, after recently just finishing that series and it being one of my favorites, I could not love this pillowcase more! AHHHHH!!! I fell to the floor screaming when I saw it in the box!

Monthly Polaroid and Coin:

For those that don’t know, each month Fae Crate has a monthly Polaroid picture that they include and a monthly coin. These are exclusive to each month and you cannot get them again. Fae Crate announces what the Polaroid is to look like and what fandom the coin is going to be from on their Instagram. I highly encourage you to check them out so you can decide if you want a box before they sell out!

image4

The Darkest Minds Polaroid ~ I absolutely love this Polaroid! It is so beautiful and captures the gang in The Darkest Minds perfectly! It is by far one of my favorite Polaroids!

image0(2)

Three Dark Crowns Coin ~ I. AM. SO. IN. LOVE. WITH. THIS. IT. IS. NOT. EVEN. FUNNY. LOOK AT THE PERFECTION THAT IS THIS COIN!!! It is definitely my favorite in the coin collection!

November’s Polaroid and Coin have already been announced. For those that want to know, they are:

  • LIFEL1K3 Polaroid & King Arthur Coin

Monthly Ebook Download:

Each month not only does Fae Crate include a hardcover book, but they also include a code so you can download a free ebook! The ebook for this month was Significance by Shelly Crane. This is a book that I have already read and have loved for years. It is one of my favorite series out there so I was really happy to get this ebook!

Book of the Month:

36321739

The Book of the Month was The Never Tilting World by Rin Chupeco. I am highly anticipating diving in to this book and I am extremely happy that it was the selection for this month. That cover is absolutely stunning!

The book also came with a card from the author that I thought was so beautiful that I had to include it! That quote is literally everything! Here it is:

image1(1)

Thank you for joining me today! I had so much fun opening this box and talking about all of the bookish items inside! What about you? Do you subscribe to Fae Crate? Do you subscribe to any other monthly book boxes? What do you think of my unboxing and the items in this month’s box? Please let me know!

BLOG TOUR (+EXCERPT) Tell Me Tru by J. Haney & S.I. Hayes

Bannerr

∴ Goodreads Amazon

SYNOPSIS:

Tru Averdeen had everything a person could want. Money, fame, the power to influence others. Her way was paved on her fortune and her face. With porcelain skin, a head of fiery curls, all framing a pair of pastel blue eyes and lips like pink roses she has been a Media Spectacle since she was born. Then she met Holly…

Holly Turner came up rough. Emotionally damaged all she wanted was a life worth living. Then she sees a face on TV crying over some lost rich daddy. Her wheels turn and soon she is face to face with Tru and the truth…

It’s been four years since that night. They don’t speak of it, not anymore. Tru has fallen away from the limelight, letting Holly take on her name, her face, friends. All Tru wants is a quiet happy existence away, and all Holly wants is what’s owed to her. It’s worked for four years…

Worked.

EXCERPT:

What is this? I wake with my hair a matted mess on my head and a note taped to my face. Upon reading the said note, I am told to have fun by Holly. Whatever the hell that is supposed to mean? After telling Alexa to find Tru’s playlist and play in the bathroom, I strip my clothes and step into my hot as sin shower. I let the water pelt and beat down against my skin. The heat letting me stretch, pop, and crack my bones in just the right way.

After my shower, I throw on my matching silk lace bra and panties before adding my black skull mini shorts. I like these because it looks like a skeleton is grabbing my ass. It comes with an unassuming black and white tank. I slip on my big bear foot slippers, telling Alexa to play music in the kitchen. That way,  by the time I make it there, the music is already going full tilt.

I bang my head to the music blaring through the room. I love Avenged Sevenfold, and what better song to be playing then Hail to the King? Best fucking song there is by A7F!

First things first, I need coffee via IV. If only that were possible. I dance my way to the coffee pot slipping a pod into my Keurig. Once it’s finished, I inhale my coffee, before taking a drink. Mmm, nice. Steamy goodness. After finishing my first cup, I start looking for food. Cam, my bodyguard, is usually up making breakfast, but I suppose he wasn’t in the mood today.

It isn’t till I’m frying bacon that all the dogs in the house go crazy. Holly left her mini pins here. So, on top of her four, I have seven. Queenie is a Red/Queensland Heeler, Shadow is a Catahoula Leopard and Pit mix, Chusky is just what his name says a Chow and Husky. Shepsky is my German Shepherd and Husky; Blue Bell is a Lab and Husky, Pom-Pom, who is by far my smallest is an Australian Shepherd and Pomeranian, making her a mini. Last and most certainly not least is my newest addition and the only pure breed, Monk, and he’s a Golden Retriever.

With the bacon almost done, eggs mixed, and veggies cut up, I’m ready to start my omelet. Closer by Nine Inch Nails is blasting through the speakers as I give my eggs one more whip. I turn around, and down the bowl goes breaking on the floor.

“Alexa, stop!” I meet Rion’s eyes. “Lay down.” I shout above the dog’s barks. All of mine hit the ground, but Holly’s are still bouncing and piddling everywhere! This, of course, includes D’artagan, which Rion is holding.

I walk over to the back door, shouting, “Out!” All the dogs are out the door, and I come back to where I was standing. I look over at Rion once more, and he’s inspecting his shirt. The dog pissed on him.

A blush creeps over my cheeks. “I’m sorry. Let me go find you a shirt. What size do you wear?”

“Nothing you got, Hon. I’ve got something in the truck. Ugh.” He says, disappearing.

I run a hand over my face before grabbing the paper towels, squatting to clean the mess up at my feet. Of course, this is also when I notice I’m going to have to wash my slippers. Where the hell is Cameron when I need him? Thinking about that- how in the hell did Rion get keys to my house? What the hell is he doing here? I’ve only had a crush on this man for like four years, and of course, he’d see me as me when I’m a mess and naked as far as hair products and makeup.

I don’t even know Rion’s back till he’s bent over and picking glass up. “Careful, you’ll cut yourself. Let me do this.”

“No, I’ve got i-Ouch, shit, fuck.” I say, cutting my finger, and Rion picks me up, setting me on the counter. He turns the sink on and puts my hand under the cold water. “Ow, that stings.”

“Oh, shush.” He pulls my hand from the water and blows on my clipped fingers, all while grabbing paper towels. “Have you got a first aid kit, band-aids, what have you?”

“Uh, uh, um…”

Rion looks at me. “Are you alright?” He crunches the paper towels around my fingers and steps back.

“Uhh, Uh-huh.” Of course, while I’m looking at him, the smoke detector picks this moment to go nuts.

“What the-” Rion cuts himself off, taking care of the mess I have going on.

I shake my head and try to clear it. “Um, uh, R-Rion, what are you doing here?”

He looks at me funny and picks up some papers off the counter. “I need you to sign these, and you were supposed to leave a check for Harol’s?”

Harol’s?” I question for a moment. “Oh, right, Harol’s, how much and what papers do I need to sign?”

“Ten should cover it for now, and this is the new contract for the wall and the rest of the security features you asked for.”

“Ten, ten, ten hundred, give me just a second, and I’ll grab my checkbook.” I climb off the counter and grab my checkbook from a drawer.

“No disrespect, but have you been drinking?” Rion asks.

“No, I need more coffee, well an IV is more like it.” I say in a big rush. I walk back over to him. “How much did you say again?”

“Well, based on the near six I spent yesterday, ten thousand should be enough to cool Harol’s jets.”

“Do you have more you need to get?”

“This is just towards your tab. Are you sure you’re alright and haven’t hit your head?”

“Sugar, haven’t eaten yet. I’ll be fine. How about I’ll make it for thirty, and that too should keep you good for a bit more?”

“If you want to give Harol a heart attack, sure- why not?”

“I-I was just thinking extra is better.”

“Ten is fine, thirty is fine, anything you plan on giving me is just fine.”

“Oh, geez, Did I forget to pay you too? I’m so sorry.” I say, making out the check for Harol.

Rion reaches over and stays my hand. “We’re good for now.” He slips the check for Harol away. “You look over those contracts, and I’ll be back to get them after the weekend. Here are your keys. I’ll let myself out.” He takes a few steps away from me. “Oh, one more thing I forgot. I believe these are yours.” He throws a red ball at me.

With that, Rion is gone, and I lose it. “What the fuck was Rion doing in my house? Why the fuck did nobody tell me? Oh, I’m going to kill her!”

REVIEW: The Burning Shadow (Origin #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

43263224. sy475

∴ Goodreads Amazon US Barnes & Noble Books-A-Million | Book Depository

Synopsis:

When Evelyn Dasher crossed paths with Luc, she was thrown headfirst into the world of the Lux—only to discover that she was already far more involved in their world than she ever suspected.

Because the Luxen aren’t the only ones with a hidden past. There’s a gap in Evie’s memory, lost months of her life and a lingering sense that something happened, something she can’t remember and nobody is willing to tell her. She needs to find out the truth about who she is—and who she was. But every answer she finds only brings up more questions.

Her search for the truth brings her ever closer to Luc, the Origin at the center of it all. He’s powerful, arrogant, inhumanly beautiful, extremely dangerous…and possibly in love with her. But even as Evie falls for him, she can’t help but wonder if his attraction is to her, or to the memory of a girl who no longer exists.

And all the while, a new threat looms: reports of a flu-like, fatal virus that the government insists is being spread by Luxen. A horrifying illness that changes whoever it touches, spreading panic across a country already at its breaking point.

#1 New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout returns to the world of the Lux with this steamy, shocking second installment of the Origin series that will leave readers reeling.

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
I loved this book! It was everything I hoped it would be and so much more! It picked up right where the last book left off and the events that followed were just twist after twist after twist. This might just be one of Jennifer’s best books yet! It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and I know I’m going to get a major book hangover now that it is over! I NEED THE NEXT BOOK!!!

“You don’t need to worry about me, Peaches. I’m always going to come back to you. That’s a promise.”

Evie- Evie surprised me in this book. I thought I had her character figured out, but NOPE. I should have known that Jennifer was going to throw a giant twist into the mix and change everything that I thought I knew. I always wanted to know what would happen if the Luxen and the Arum were cross bred and… now I know and it is nothing like I expected it to be! I feel like we only scratched the surface with what Evie is capable of in this book and I am so excited to dive in more in future installments.

“You,” he spoke. “It’s only ever been you. Before. Now. Later. There’s been no one else. There…just can’t be.”

Luc- Could I love Luc more? No…. I really don’t think so! He is sweet and protective and caring and fierce and strong and brave and just…. everything. He is so precious and I am probably attached to him in an unhealthy way but that is not the point and I fell even deeper in love with him during this book. The way he cares about Evie and the lengths he will go to to keep her safe is awe-inspiring. I think if I had to pick one emoji I could use to describe this book, it would have to be the heart eyes an 90% of that would be directed at Luc! I need more of him! I would really love a chapter in his POV Jennifer if you’re listening…

“I am not walking away again. If I kiss you, if I touch you again, I will not be able to go back to the way things are now.” The next breath he took trembled as much as I was. “I won’t be able to pretend that you aren’t my everything”.

Katy/Daemon/The Old Crew- It was so great to see everyone again! I cried more than once at seeing them all so happy and grown up! And we got to see Katy pregnant?! My babies are having babies and I can’t even wrap my head around that! And Dee is a spokes person for the Luxen now?! I feel like everything has just come full circle and I couldn’t be more proud of her! Plus, we got to see Dawson and Bethany’s daughter Ash! Our first natural Origin baby and she was just so precious! I am DYING to know more about her and any special abilities she may have! (And I would so totally be down for another spin-off about her!!)

“There is only you and me. Boyfriend. Girlfriend. Mates. Lovers,” he said, and muscles low in my stomach curled tight. “I don’t care what you call me as long as you call me yours.”

The Cliffhanger- I wasn’t exactly surprised that Jason Dasher is still alive. Like I always say: If you don’t see a body, see it burned to ashes, and scattered to the farthest corners of the Earth, they aren’t dead! I pretty much guessed it as soon as Evie started hearing a male voice in her head. I have been reading Jennifer’s books for a while now and I’d like to think I’m starting to get an idea of where her mind goes. (I say that, but look how shocked I was with Storm and Fury) I was also starting to catch on with the whole Evie being a trap for Luc thing too. Given, I was thinking she was made to kill him instead of being his ultimate weakness, but I was on the right track. Plus, that is something I’m happy I was wrong about.

“You lost me,” I whispered. “I lost you.”
“Did we lose each other?” he asked, and then I felt his fingers on my cheeks, chasing a tear that had sneaked free. “You and I are here right now, aren’t we? Somehow, you found me, and I’m not someone who believes in happenstance. I don’t think it was a fluke … I think it was something that was bound to happen and I…”
I opened my eyes, finding his. “What?”
“I was just waiting.”

SIDE NOTE: After reading the quote, “You’re the Burning Shadow and he’s the Darkest Star, and together, you will bring about the brightest night.” , I have a really high suspicion that the final book is going to be called The Brightest Night. I could be really wrong, but if I’m right, I called it here!!!

“By the way, just going to remind you that you told me last night you missed me.”
I had. “I must’ve been high.”
“On my presence.”

Overall, I highly enjoyed this book (as if you couldn’t tell that already) and I will definitely be continuing the series!!! How could I not?? Jennifer is one of my favorite authors and she sucks me into her books like no one else! I can’t imagine not reading the next installment!

***P.S. I know all of the quotes I used are Luc quotes, but after reading this review, do you honestly think I could use any others?!***

EXCERPT: Shadows Within by J.P. Cane

36493064. sy475

Firefighter Reed Williams and his bride, Lily, are enjoying their long-awaited honeymoon in Paris. But bliss turns to agony when they’re assaulted along the Seine and Lily is murdered.

Now Reed is plunged into a world of bloodlust and horror, led by a woman who offers immortality at the price of his humanity.

Nothing makes sense. Reed doesn’t breathe, doesn’t have a pulse, and doesn’t even cast a shadow. His loss of Lily is all the more terrifying as he experiences visions of crows stealing his memories of her and all that he holds dear. Overwhelmed, he flees his relentless pursuers for home in Philadelphia.

Back in the States, he stumbles upon three unexpected allies, who, like Reed and his attackers, have non-beating hearts and shadowless bodies. The trio–a brilliant, but socially graceless linguistics professor; a grifting ladies’ man without a past; and a penitent hitman trying to atone for the widows he’s made–must pull Reed back from reckless despair and help him remember his heroic self in order to defeat those who want to claim his soul forever.

𝐄𝐗𝐂𝐄𝐑𝐏𝐓:

Reed takes refuge in a small bathroom. A momentary sanctuary till he figures out how to get away from Eddie and Marie. That is, if he can’t kill the smug assholes. The little Brit is unbelievably strong and the psycho witch put some weird spell on Reed. Whatever she has fed him must have given her some control over him, like he’s hypnotized. Maybe while he slept, she planted commands into his subconscious. Creepy as hell.

Their whispers beyond the door are probably about him and how to torture him further. Good luck with that; nothing can be worse than this.

After he turns on the tap, Reed leans against the sink, his hands gripping the bright porcelain as if it is a rock in a swift current. Too much swirls around him now: the surreal moment of waking in a strange woman’s bed; the fathomless grief of learning his wife is dead; the vulnerability and rage Marie caused.

His shoulders hitch nearly to his ears as his breath quickens. Confusion, pain, grief churn inside him, stoking his internal inferno.

Lily is gone. Dead, murdered, thrown away like garbage.

He screams and his arms fly out, both fists cracking through and disappearing into the wall before him. He yanks fistfuls of the gypsum plaster out, leaving numerous gouges in the wall.

Lily needed him, and he couldn’t do a damned thing to help. Those bastards.

Searching for something to grab, he finds the towel rod near the toilet. The flower embroidered hand towels go flying after he tears the rod from the wall. Picturing Marie, he swings it down, down, and down again on the lip of the sink, till the rod becomes pieces.

His fury undiminished, he finds all that remains is a small cabinet fixed to the wall. Reed wrenches it free and smashes it against the wall, adding more holes, and sending framed pictures crashing to the floor. When that’s used up, he kicks the wall till, finally, he collapses

REVIEW: The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air #1) by Holly Black

26032825

Goodreads | Amazon US | Barnes & Noble | Books-A-Million | Book Depository

Synopsis:

Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
After three years of wanting to read it and two years of people telling me I should, I finally picked up The Cruel Prince. The most important thing I can say in this review is that the book was very different than what I thought it would be. I was under the impression that it was this beautifully written, hate-to-love/forbidden romance, with fairies, political intrigue, and an all out adventure. The best way I can describe it to you is that I thought this was going to be a better, more fairy oriented, The Iron King. Yeah… That was not this book. To give you my thoughts accurately, I’ll just tackle those one by one:

The Writing Style- It got better as the book went on, but when I first started the book, the writing came off info-dumpy, a lot of telling instead of showing, and just wasn’t flowing well. As I said, it did get better, but I can see how some people DNF’d this book in the beginning because of it.

The Romance- Before I get into the specifics of the romance in this book, I’m just gonna let you know that I am a hopeless romantic, I hate to read a book without a romance, and the whole reason I picked this book up was because I heard that the couple in this book was one of the best ever written. With all that in mind, I don’t know what some people were reading, but the Cardan/Jude romance, was practically nonexistent!!! I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. If I wouldn’t have been told by other people beforehand, I would have NEVER paired the two together. They HATE each other and I’m not entirely sure they wouldn’t kill each other if they could. This book is told in Jude’s perspective and she never expressed anything other than hate for Cardan. She acknowledges he is beautiful (like every other fairy), but she never even remotely expresses being attracted to him. If there truly is a romance budding between these two, it is about the slowest burn possible. I’ve never read anything like it. Like, I saw nothing between them.

There is one small kiss towards the end of the book, but the whole reason it happened was because Jude wanted to throw Cardan off balance. It had nothing to do with being attracted to him or wanting to do it. And after that, she kept thinking about him in that way. It was like a switch had been thrown. It came entirely out of left field and made me not connect with it at all. Whenever Jude had any feeling like that towards Cardan after the kiss, my reaction was like, “Oh, please. This is ridiculous.” It felt like the author was trying put something together that was just not there. I mean come on, even excluding all of that, Jude is literally with another guy for a big portion of this book! I just can’t.

Fairies/Political Intrigue- If nothing else, this book had plenty of fairies and their politics. And that was ultimately this book’s saving grace for me. I found myself becoming hooked on all the drama and politics. I might have disliked everything else about the book, but this aspect of it kept me reading and made me give it the rating that I did. The story was unpredictable with many twists and turns, I ate the drama up like candy, and I am dying to know what will happen next.

Jude- This might come off as really bad and if Jude is one of your favorite female characters, I’m sorry… But I really didn’t like her. She made so many stupid and reckless decisions that I just couldn’t bring myself to care anymore towards the end, because I knew I was going to disagree with her on her ultimate decision. She was unrelatable and 90% of her decisions made absolutely no sense to me. In any other story where she is not the main character, she would have been dead ten times over by now. She really is one of the rare instances where I would call a character TSTL. I’d say that I hope she gets better in the next book, but I highly doubt it.

Cardan- Going in to this book, I had such I high expectations and hopes for Cardan. I had heard that he was bad and morally grey and snarky and arrogant and just basically everything I look for in male characters. But he just came off dull for 80% of the book! For a long time, I was just really disappointed with him and the only thing about him that I found even remotely interesting was that he has a tail! (No, I’m not even joking.) He was just background noise until Jude had him as her prisoner. I actually have hopes for him in the next book and I want him to become the male I was expecting him to be. I guess I’ll just have to wait to find out.

Jude’s Sisters- I hate Taryn and how she acts. She comes across as a spoiled brat and her eagerness to throw her relationship with Jude under the bus infuriates and disgusts me to no end. Vivienne was a lot more relatable and I liked her character a lot more. She was actually my favorite out of the three sisters. She seemed like the only one that had her head on straight.

It might not seem like it, but despite everything listed above, I did enjoy this book. I highly enjoyed the plot and the world and I will be continuing with the next book. I am very eager to start it and see where this story goes next.
