We are what we are. Nothing more, nothing less. There is good and evil among every kind of people. It’s the evil among us who rule now.”

MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:

I loved this book. I had read Anne Bishop’s The Others series and I really enjoyed it. Because of this, I wanted to give her other books a try. I am so glad I did. This book ensnared me. Within the first few chapters, I was beyond hooked and I did not want to put this down for the life of me.

I knew going in that this would be a dark story. I just didn’t know how dark. This book does not shy away from the hard parts of life or the horrible things that everyday people do. Everything in this world is complex and multidimensional. There is no character that is completely good and that made them all very realistic.

Speaking of the characters, I love every one of them (except for the villains of course). Usually when I read a book, I fall in love with a few of the characters and just like the others. Anne Bishop writes her characters phenomenally and in a way that makes you deeply emotionally connect with them.

After reading this book, Jaenelle is probably one of my favorite female characters of all time. Going in, I was concerned because I knew that Jaenelle would start the series off as a child and I was worried that I would not connect with her because of that. I am so happy to say that I was wrong on that front. Jaenelle was very relatable and I emotionally connected with her as soon as she appeared on the page. She is so powerful but only wants to use that power to help the people she cares about. She has such a good heart and her fierce belief in what is right is so inspiring. I just love her character so much!

I loved Daemon as well. At the beginning of the book, I was scared that he was going to be a villain and kind of brushed him off. But as the story went on, I learned more about his character and the more I learned, the more I appreciated him. Daemon is morally grey character and he will do whatever it takes to protect the people he cares about. He is not afraid to get his hands dirty and that is what I love about him. His need to protect Jaenelle was also what drew me to him. For such a harsh and cold character, when he was with her, he was as gentle as a teddy bear. Those moments made my heart melt and really endeared Daemon to me.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was an excellent start to the series and I am definitely addicted. Obviously, I will be reading the next installment, Heir to the Shadows.

He was the friend who would become an enemy in order to remain a friend.”

SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:

I love this book, but then again, was I really expecting a different result? Anne Bishop just has a way of writing that ensnares the reader and I have become addicted to her writing.

This world that Anne Bishop has created is so complex and brilliant. The different layers and dimensions in it can’t be simply explained. Normally, I would say that the complexity would make the story confusing, but if anyone can pull it off, Bishop can.

I love all of the characters in this series and I am sad to see them go. I am ashamed to say that when I go into a series, I am actually more shocked when a character dies and does not come back than when a character dies and then does come back. In most series, a few minor characters might die, but I generally expect the main characters and the crucial side characters to survive. Because of this, I went into this book expecting my babies to make it through the and I ended up getting my heart broken. Anne Bishop DID kill off characters and I was shocked to my core at the number of them that did not make it.

SIDE NOTE: One thing that is unique to this series is the point of views. Jaenelle, who is the main character, is the only person who did not get a point of view throughout the entire series. I have never seen that happen before and it really stood out to me. I think that it was brilliant on Anne Bishop’s part because it always made me wonder what Jaenelle was thinking and I was always on the edge of my seat to see what she would do next.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It did tear my heart out a little, but it was definitely worth it. I do know that there are other books in the series but they do not follow the same main characters. I will be looking into reading those because I am addicted to Anne Bishop’s writing and I know that if I read them, I will fall in love with all the new characters. I can’t wait!

🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁

She was the most painful, most glorious dance of his life.”

Anne Bishop has done it again. She has made me fall in love with yet another one of her books. This was a perfect sequel to the first book, Daughter of the Blood. Anything that was lacking in the first book (which wasn’t much) was put into this second installment.

This definitely exceeded my expectations (which were pretty high to begin with). Obviously, I will be reading the next book, Queen of the Darkness.

SIDE NOTE: I find it extremely interesting that, while Jaenelle is the main character, we haven’t gotten her point of view. Everyone around her (including the villains) have gotten one and I am really curious why Anne Bishop decided to write this that way.
