John Matthew has come a long way since he was found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown to himself and to those around him. After he was taken in by the Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was- or his true identity. Indeed, the fallen Brother Darius has returned, but with a different face and a very different destiny. As a vicious personal vendetta takes John into the heart of the war, he will need to call up on both who he is now and who he once was in order to face off against evil incarnate.
Xhex, a symphath assassin, has long steeled herself against the attraction between her and John Matthew. Having already lost one lover to madness, she will not allow the male of worth to fall prey to the darkness of her twisted life. When fate intervenes, however, the two discover that love, like destiny, is inevitable between soul mates.
“No, you’ve got it all wrong, John.” Reading his emotions, she shook her head. “You’re not half the male you could be because of what was done to you. You’re twice what anyone else is because you survived.”
MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGHOUT:
This book sent me on a roller coaster of emotions. I laughed, I sobbed, I smiled, and I felt anger. There were even a couple of times when I thought about DNFing this book because of the emotional ups and downs I was going through while reading this.
John & Xhex- I have been waiting SOOOO long for these two to get together and I must say, this book did not let me down in that respect. Their story was perfect and developed exactly as it should have. They have both been through so much and I am overjoyed that they found happiness in each other.
Darius- I must admit, I was really confused for the majority of this book when it came to Darius. I had no idea why we were following his plot line and I started skipping most of his chapters towards the end. But when I got to the end of the book and the reasoning for his POV became clear, I could not have been more grateful for it. I was a sobbing mess when I got to the final chapter in Darius’s head.
Quinn & Blay- These two were a big reason as to why I was angry for a large portion of this book. Quinn angered me to the point where I wanted to hurt him. He was blatantly rubbing his conquests in Blay’s face and it broke my heart. I was so hurt on Blay’s behalf and I believe in my heart of hearts that he deserves better than Quinn.
Lash- He didn’t suffer enough. That’s all I’ve got to say.
Payne- I am happy for Payne in a weird way. I know she’s hurt right now, but I am happy that she finally got out from her mother’s thumb and is with her brother.
The Camera Crew/Paranormal Investigators- If I’m being honest, I read the first few of their chapters, but after that, I quit. Their POVs weren’t giving me any enjoyment and I started skipping them altogether.
Why I Will Not Be Continuing This Series:
I have decided not to finish this series. That is because, after my months spent away from it, I have grown as a reader and I have starting noticing things that I never noticed before. With this book, it is J.R. Ward’s writing style. I HATE IT. With a fiery passion. Her word choice just infuriates me and I can’t take any more of it.
Another reason that I will not be continuing is because I skip around for the majority of her books, which I have NEVER done. I have ZERO interest in the Lessening Society and at this point, it is starting to feel like the same villain over and over and over and over again. It is repetitive and boring.
Overall, this series just isn’t for me. I am a character driven person, and while this series has some great morally grey characters, it isn’t enough for me. I need a story with about 75% characters and 25% plot. This series is 50/50 and that means that fifty percent of the time, I am not enjoying what I am reading. I definitely see the draw to this series and why other people love it so much. I will always care about these characters and I will never forget them. This just isn’t the series for me.
