∴ Numbers (New Species #14) by Laurann Dohner

Story 14 New Species series. It is advisable to read the books in order, to get the most enjoyment from the series.

A human female claiming to have been reared at Mercile has demanded entry to Homeland. Hero rushes to Medical and comes face-to-face with his past. One look at Candi and the life he’s built since gaining freedom comes crashing down around him.

~Numbers had two different stories so I am going to review them both individually.~

Mourn (4.25 STARS)-
I really liked my reread of this book. I highly enjoyed the characters and their plot line. I am just a sucker for books where two people find each other and heal together. Plus, Mourn is just so precious.

I ultimately rated it the same this time because of pacing. Things moved a little too slow for my tastes. My biggest problem was the lack of originality. This book consisted entirely of plots used in the previous books. Nothing new was mentioned and the story lacked any uniqueness.

Hero (5 STARS)-
I really liked my reread of this book. I was gripped really quickly and I didn’t want to put it down. Time just flew by while reading and, before I knew it, I was finished. I enjoyed the flashbacks and the back and forth in time throughout the book. I liked getting to see Candi and Hero as adults and as children.

Candi- I loved Candi. She was just so brave and I loved her mindset. She wanted Hero and she wasn’t going to let anything get in her way. Her persistence and her openness with her feelings/experiences was nice to see as well.

Hero- I was concerned at the beginning of the book because of Hero’s stubbornness. He wouldn’t just accept that Candi was back and it frustrated me. But he came around after a while and I warmed up to his character. I loved how he was constantly concerned for Candi and how he always put her before himself.

I really hope that Laurann Dohner decides to come back to this series eventually. I love it so much and there are so many other characters whose story I want to read. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that something will happen eventually.

Mourn (4.25 STARS)-
I liked this book. It was fast paced and always had my attention. I finished it in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down. The time just flew by. The story actually seemed shorter to me than the other installments. I kind of wish Laurann Dohner would have extended the story a little bit.

I liked Mourn. I really felt bad for him because of him losing his mate. He really cared about her. The book started off with him picking a fight with Darkness because he wanted it to just end. I cried a lot when he talked because I could feel his pain through the words said. As the story went on, I felt bad for him more and more. When he told Dana that 149’s (his mate) last dying wish was to be held by another male, my heart broke into a million pieces. I can’t imagine the pain of watching the person I love the most die in someone else’s arms. I just wanted to hug him and tell him everything was going to be okay. I am so glad he found Dana and knows true happiness.

I liked Dana. She lost her husband to cancer two years ago and was still grieving him when she met Mourn. I felt really bad for her and I was so glad she found Mourn when she did. Mourn wanted to mate her immediately but she held off. I was actually surprised that she was the cautious one in the relationship. I didn’t think she would be.

The main negative I had with this book was that it felt really similar to past books. Mourn’s story is almost identical to Obsidian’s and I felt like that turned me off of it. There were also little things that have happened before and the story just didn’t come off very original to me. It made it kind of boring to pretty much read the same thing.

Hero (5 STARS)-
I loved this book. I liked how fast paced the book was. I didn’t feel like there were any unnecessary scenes which is always a good thing. The plot was set up a little bit different than past books because Hero and Candi had known each other before and were already in love. I liked that aspect of the book a little more than I thought I would.

Hero was great. I had met him before in Valiant’s book so I knew I liked him already. He was a good guy that did the right thing when Tammy was thrown into his cell and protected her even if it cost him pain. I have to admit that he was a little stubborn at the beginning of the book when Candi first showed up. I kind of felt like he was not looking at things from her point of view. But after he came around and decided to give Candi a second chance, he really grew on me and turned into the male I knew he was capable of being. He was really sweet and caring. It warmed my heart how protective he was towards Candi and how defensive he got when he deemed someone a threat to her.

I loved Candi. She had been through so much and came out stronger in the end. It takes a really strong person to go through what she did. From the age of five, she has had to fight for her survival while never knowing if she would live to see the next day. She was locked up in an asylum at sixteen and since that is one of my deepest fears, I can’t imagine how hard it was on her. I liked that she survived everyday just to get revenge on the people that “killed” Hero. I felt like that showed truly how much she loved him and how far she would go to avenge him.

I liked all of the flashbacks we got. I enjoyed getting to see glimpses of Hero and Candi when they were younger. I also enjoyed watching the pivotal moments in their lives and how it lead them to fall in love and then be separated.

This book brought up all of my old feelings toward this series. I am disappointed that the series is over. There are many places it can go and hopefully in the future we will get more. I love all of these characters and there are many more that I would like to get to know. (Flame and Amanda in particular.)
